The Magnolia is a very ancient plant and it actually evolved before there were bees to pollinate it. Fossilised specimens have been been found that 20-95 million years old. It is thought that they were pollinated by species of beetle which explains why the flowers carpels are stronger than other flowers. Today we have identified approx 210 species of Magnolia (named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol).
